Ballard has an immediate opportunity for a Mechanical Technologist to join its Technology and Product Development Team in Burnaby, BC. The successful candidate will apply their strong technical skills to the develop fuel cell and fuel cell component testing equipment for Ballard's state-of-the-art test lab. Working closely with a team of technicians, technologists and engineers in our fast-paced environment, the candidate will advance and maintain Ballard's broad line of fuel cell testing equipment. Applications supported will include motive power applications for materials handling, power modules for zero emissions transit busses and engineering services for clients including world-leading automotive OEMs developing zero emissions passenger vehicles. The successful candidate will work well with senior engineering staff, is capable of independent work and will contribute to the development of Ballard's fuel cell system products. Responsibilities: Maintenance and changes to fuel cell testing equipment Troubleshooting and failure analysis of mechanical components and systems Working closely with the design engineers for their guidance in support of the changes and builds of Test Equipment and Engineering Prototypes Mechanical build of the Engineering Prototype including but not limited to: Custom machining (lathe, mill, brake press) and/or welding parts not originally identified or that did not fit as expected from the engineering model or parts identified Design and fabricate or have fabricated, new minor parts and bracketry This involves structural, and non-structural parts, tubing and piping, off-the-shelf components, pumps and compressors, instrumentation and wiring harnesses. Working closely and in coordination with the Electrical technician during the co-installation of the wiring harnesses and other electrical equipment going into the builds. Studies drawings and bills of Materials (BOMs) and reviews with the build manager and Engineer to understand the scope of work Working with (incomplete) drawings, sketches, picture images and 3D CAD models to assemble proof-of-concept working fuel cell-based systems or "builds", for Engineering use and evaluation in support of product development. Occasionally creates a general layout to help visualize the build process as well as to identify gaps in parts purchasing Sourcing and ordering required parts, components and/or raw materials and consumables either from within Ballard's Inventory or from 3rd party vendors Responsible for the organization and maintenance of inventory parts Mechanical troubleshooting and modifications to equipment during the commission and testing of the Engineering concept On call maintenance support for 3-4 weeks a year Other duties as assigned Requirements: Must have a Diploma in Mechanical Technology or related field and/or Red Seal Plumber 10-15 years' experience within a high-tech industry Experience assembling of parts into a complex system from drawings Experience with Pipefitting, tube bending, Machining (lathe, mill), fastener torquing, precision measurements, fitting up straight and tapered threads, and hand tools Experience reading drawings such as Process and Instrumentation Drawings and machined parts Ability to create parts from detailed drawings and hand sketches Knowledge of the workings of mechanical systems and parts to aid with troubleshooting mechanical system issues Experience manipulating/building from 3D CAD Models Ability to work with 3rd party fabricators and vendors Experience working with Engineers on the assembly of concept systems Proficient Computer Skills, including but not limited to Excel and Outlook Knowledge of mechanical/electronic components and their characteristics, applications and limitations Demonstrated capability for critical thinking Excellent time management and organizational skills Strong interpersonal skills Strong oral and written communication skills and good listening skills Ability to work in a multi-functional team environment Additional Consideration: Experience with instrumentation including pressure, temperature and flow measurement devices Ability to do the occasional TIG or MIG weld with Aluminum or 316 SS Experience designing, drawing and analyzing mechanical components The typical hiring range for this position is $75,000 - $93,000.
