The city is 145 kilometres (90 mi) northeast of the provincial capital of Regina and 45 kilometres (28 mi) southwest of Yorkton. Melville is known as a community rich in sport and is home to the SJHL's Melville Millionaires. It is also known for its railway history which is featured in the Railway Museum located in the Melville Regional Park.
