The Registered Nurse (RN) plays a crucial role on our mission driven team. As a member of the health care team the RNs are trained to work both within the cardiac catheterization laboratories and the recovery & reception area. This unique environment provides staff with the opportunity to participate in and help to advance care of our patients throughout the full continuum of their time within the HIU. Staff are provided with the opportunity for additional specialized training within the catheterization laboratories. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at McMaster Children’s Hospital is comprised of a Level III NICU, a Level IIc nursery and a neonatal transport team, providing medical and surgical care to neonatal patients and their families. Our NICU serves a broad geographic area within southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family-centered care with a strong focus on evidence-based best practice and continuous quality improvement. McMaster NICU is also actively involved in a number of collaborative quality improvement initiatives provincially, nationally and internationally.   The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a fast paced, complex and highly acute environment. The Registered Nurse is an integral member of the interdisciplinary team, working collaboratively in the Level III NICU and Level IIc nursery. Responsibilities include the provision of high quality neonatal nursing care to patients and families and demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience.

The Juravinski Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 25 bed tertiary care unit supporting multiple clinical programs including the regional programs for central-south Ontario. The ICU provides specialized levels of care to the hematology, oncology, orthopedic, medical and surgical patient populations, utilizing a multidisciplinary and collaborative team approach dedicated to the principles of patient and family-centered care.  Our ICU nurses are set up for success and go through a comprehensive onsite orientation program, led by experienced health care professionals and educators. Our nurses treat highly complex patients using innovative treatment modalities including Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), Impella, Intra-aortic Balloon Pump and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies (CRRT).  The ICU also supports the Critical Care Response Team for the HGH site, bringing highly skilled, specialized, critical care nurses, as members of a multidisciplinary team, to offer support and consultation outside of the ICU.   As a Royal College Accredited training program and through our affiliation with McMaster University, we offer opportunities for learning and conduct world renowned research.

C4 is an inpatient unit providing care for individuals with malignant hematological diseases. The primary modes of therapy are intensive chemotherapy, transfusion and antibiotic support for immunosuppression and stem cell transplantation. As a member of the healthcare team, the Registered Nurse coordinates and evaluates patient care and provides nursing care according to the job description and Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses on Unit C4.

Acute Medicine 8 South is an active adult general internal medicine unit with a 4-bed Step-Down Unit. An interdisciplinary team provides care to an acutely ill, primarily geriatric, patient population, including patients with multi-system chronic illnesses. Using a client-centered approach, the Registered Nurse (RN) provides leadership in the coordination and evaluation of nursing care of patients with multisystem medical conditions awaiting transition to the community setting. The RN works collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members and community agencies to coordinate care and education of patients and their families. Through evidence-based clinical practice and strong leadership in healthcare delivery, the RN sets the standards of excellence in the care of patients at HHS. The RN establishes and implements education plans with and for patients and families and acts as an accessible and knowledgeable resource for patients and their families.

Our Registered Nurses develop and practice their skills in caring for stroke and Neurology patients in the acute phase of stroke care.  Our unique care model provides opportunities for enhanced continuity of patient care through specialized unit dedicated to the management of Stroke and Neurology patients with dynamic and strong interdisciplinary teams. As a member of the healthcare team in this unique model of care, the Registered Nurse coordinates, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care according to the job description, Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses on 7 South and the Canadian Best Practice Recommendations for Stroke Care.

The Registered Nurse will work as part of, and are supported by, a multi-professional team within the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). As a member of the multi-professional healthcare team, the Registered Nurse coordinates and evaluates patient care and provides nursing care according to the standards of practice for Registered Nurses.  PICU nurses provide medical and surgical intensive care, working collaboratively in both the Level 3 PICU and Level 2 step-down areas which are fast-paced, complex and highly technologically integrated environments. In addition to working within the unit, once the required experience is obtained, opportunities exist for the PICU Registered Nurses to complete advanced training to work within the Pediatric Critical Care Response Team (PACE), as well as become a member of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team, which provides land transport for critically ill children across southern Ontario.

The Registered Nurse on Medically Complex provides person-centered care to patients and is seen as a role model for their colleagues. The RN provides guidance and support to other nurses and is prepared to take on the leadership of the charge nurse role on the unit and to collaborate with other nurses within SPH  as needed. The RN communicates and coordinates closely with both nurses and members of the multidisciplinary team to promote the best possible psycho-social, emotional, and physical outcomes for patients on Medically Complex. The RN is supported by the Clinical Manager and other nurses including Registered Practical Nurses, Nursing Case Managers, Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Education and Development Clinician.

The Pediatric Inpatient Surgical Care Unit is located at McMaster Children's Hospital Site of Hamilton Health Sciences. This inpatient unit provides acute tertiary and sub-specialty surgical care including pediatric trauma to children age 0-17. 3Y prides itself on a friendly and welcoming environment with an emphasis on the wellbeing and mentorship of our nurses. 3Y is a dynamic, fast-paced unit that is committed to investing in our nurses’ professional growth and development with the goal of developing a community of specialized pediatric surgical nurses who will seamlessly provide care to our patients. As a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, the Registered Nurse will apply their clinical expertise of pediatric diseases requiring surgical management to provide comprehensive nursing care to children 0-17 years as outlined within the practice standards and guidelines by the College of Nurses of Ontario. Nurses are set up for success and go through a comprehensive onsite orientation program, led by experienced health care professionals and educators to build a foundation of surgical knowledge as well as create confidence to care for pediatric patients.
