The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the Acute Medicine Program at the Hamilton General Hospital will be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the Extended Class-Adult, and will work within the scope of practice of the RN-EC provided by the College. Collaborating with interdisciplinary team members, and using a patient and family centered model of care.  The NP is responsible to: provide direct patient care, including the assessment and treatment of complex medical patients, coordination of care, discharge planning, and the coordination of related community and other resources for this patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings; initiate, participate, and/or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interdisciplinary care teams.  The Nurse Practitioner will work in partnership with General Internal Medicine, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education.

As a member of the healthcare team, the Registered Nurse in Inpatient Overflow provides primary nursing care to either 4 or 5 patients. The Registered Nurse coordinates and facilitates patient care and practices within the College of Nursing Standards.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at McMaster Children’s Hospital is comprised of a Level III NICU, a Level IIc nursery and a neonatal transport team, providing medical and surgical care to neonatal patients and their families. Our NICU serves a broad geographic area within southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family-centered care with a strong focus on evidence-based best practice and continuous quality improvement. McMaster NICU is also actively involved in a number of collaborative quality improvement initiatives provincially, nationally and internationally.   The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a fast paced, complex and highly acute environment. The Juravinski Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 25 bed tertiary care unit supporting multiple clinical programs including the regional programs for central-south Ontario. The ICU provides specialized levels of care to the hematology, oncology, orthopedic, medical and surgical patient populations, utilizing a multidisciplinary and collaborative team approach dedicated to the principles of patient and family-centered care.  Our ICU nurses are set up for success and go through a comprehensive onsite orientation program, led by experienced health care professionals and educators. As a member of the multidiscipline healthcare team, the Registered Nurse coordinates and evaluates patient care and provides nursing care according to the standards of practice for Registered Nurses in Critical Care.

C4 is an inpatient unit providing care for individuals with malignant hematological diseases. The primary modes of therapy are intensive chemotherapy, transfusion and antibiotic support for immunosuppression and stem cell transplantation. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the Pediatric Weight Management Program at McMaster Children’s Hospital will provide leadership and promote excellence in pediatric family centered nursing care through expert clinical practice, education, consultation and research. The NP would support the clinical activity of the Endocrinologists / Pediatricians and the associated patient care and interventions through the Pediatric Weight Management Program. The program is most focused in outpatient care, although occasional inpatient care occurs. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team members, and using a patient and family centered model of care, the NP is responsible to: provide direct patient care, coordination of care, discharge planning, and the coordination of related community and other resources for this patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings; initiate, participate, and/or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interdisciplinary care teams. The NP will work in partnership with General Pediatrics, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education. The NP reports to the Director, Critical Care and Ambulatory Services, McMaster Children's Hospital, and the Chief of Nursing Practice.

Participants in the SPEP program will gain relevant work experience under the supervision of an appointed preceptor for a minimum of 140 clinical hours. Practice hours may be extended, depending on individual learning needs. Applicants will demonstrate nursing knowledge, skill and judgment and exhibit an understanding of the CNO practice standards in keeping with the Hamilton Health Sciences policies and standards. The NP will also be responsible to mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings. This includes initiating, participating, and/or leading programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interdisciplinary care teams.

Acute Medicine 8 South is an active adult general internal medicine unit with a 4-bed Step-Down Unit. An interdisciplinary team provides care to an acutely ill, primarily geriatric, patient population, including patients with multi-system chronic illnesses. Using a client-centered approach, the Registered Nurse (RN) provides leadership in the coordination and evaluation of nursing care of patients with multisystem medical conditions awaiting transition to the community setting. The RN works collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members and community agencies to coordinate care and education of patients and their families. Through evidence-based clinical practice and strong leadership in healthcare delivery, the RN sets the standards of excellence in the care of patients at HHS. The RN establishes and implements education plans with and for patients and families and acts as an accessible and knowledgeable resource for patients and their families.

The Nurse Practitioner in Orthopedics will be responsible for managing Orthopedic Patients post operatively so that they will be more fully supported during the entire care continuum.  Nurse Practitioners-(Adult) are advanced practice nurses whose principal role is to provide comprehensive, holistic, family-centred care to adult clients, in acute care and ambulatory settings, through the use of advanced skills, knowledge and education in health assessment, diagnoses and management, as well as health promotion and disease prevention. The Nurse Practitioner-Adult has a Master’s degree in Nursing, has successfully completed a nurse practitioner program in the specialty of Adult Care and has obtained the NP specialty certificate through the approved registration exam.
