The Registered Nurse (RN) plays a crucial role on our mission driven team. As a member of the health care team the RNs are trained to work both within the cardiac catheterization laboratories and the recovery & reception area. This unique environment provides staff with the opportunity to participate in and help to advance care of our patients throughout the full continuum of their time within the HIU. Staff are provided with the opportunity for additional specialized training within the catheterization laboratories. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at McMaster Children’s Hospital is comprised of a Level III NICU, a Level IIc nursery and a neonatal transport team, providing medical and surgical care to neonatal patients and their families. Our NICU serves a broad geographic area within southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family-centered care with a strong focus on evidence-based best practice and continuous quality improvement. McMaster NICU is also actively involved in a number of collaborative quality improvement initiatives provincially, nationally and internationally.   The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a fast paced, complex and highly acute environment. The Registered Nurse is an integral member of the interdisciplinary team, working collaboratively in the Level III NICU and Level IIc nursery. Responsibilities include the provision of high quality neonatal nursing care to patients and families and demonstrating a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience.

The Juravinski Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 25 bed tertiary care unit supporting multiple clinical programs including the regional programs for central-south Ontario. The ICU provides specialized levels of care to the hematology, oncology, orthopedic, medical and surgical patient populations, utilizing a multidisciplinary and collaborative team approach dedicated to the principles of patient and family-centered care.  Our ICU nurses are set up for success and go through a comprehensive onsite orientation program, led by experienced health care professionals and educators. As a member of the multidiscipline healthcare team, the Registered Nurse coordinates and evaluates patient care and provides nursing care according to the standards of practice for Registered Nurses in Critical Care.

Our nurses treat highly complex patients using innovative treatment modalities including Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), Impella, Intra-aortic Balloon Pump and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies (CRRT).  The ICU also supports the Critical Care Response Team for the HGH site, bringing highly skilled, specialized, critical care nurses, as members of a multidisciplinary team, to offer support and consultation outside of the ICU.   As a Royal College Accredited training program and through our affiliation with McMaster University, we offer opportunities for learning and conduct world renowned research.

C4 is an inpatient unit providing care for individuals with malignant hematological diseases. The primary modes of therapy are intensive chemotherapy, transfusion and antibiotic support for immunosuppression and stem cell transplantation. As a member of a Multidisciplinary Health Care team, the Registered Nurse coordinates, performs and evaluates interventional diagnostic radiology examinations and provides patient care to meet the clients and family needs with the core values of respect, caring, innovation and accountability. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the Emergency Department at McMaster Children’s Hospital will provide leadership and promote excellence in pediatric family centered nursing care through expert clinical practice, education, consultation and research. The NP will work within a multidisciplinary team in an academic Emergency Department. The NP will be an active member of the frontline staff, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team members, and using a patient and family centered model of care to provide direct patient care, coordination of care, discharge planning, and the coordination of related community, and other resources for patients. The NP will tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings.  The NP will work in partnership with various sub-specialists, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education.

Acute Medicine 8 South is an active adult general internal medicine unit with a 4-bed Step-Down Unit. An interdisciplinary team provides care to an acutely ill, primarily geriatric, patient population, including patients with multi-system chronic illnesses. Using a client-centered approach, the Registered Nurse (RN) provides leadership in the coordination and evaluation of nursing care of patients with multisystem medical conditions awaiting transition to the community setting. The RN works collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members and community agencies to coordinate care and education of patients and their families. Through evidence-based clinical practice and strong leadership in healthcare delivery, the RN sets the standards of excellence in the care of patients at HHS. The RN establishes and implements education plans with and for patients and families and acts as an accessible and knowledgeable resource for patients and their families.

Reporting directly to the Clinical Leader, JCC Clinics, the Primary Nurse accepts privileges and responsibilities of authority, accountability and autonomy for patient care and professional development. The Primary Nurse will provide patient-centred nursing care for oncology patients (within specific disease sites and treatment modalities) and their families based on the values of respect, caring, innovation and accountability. Primary Nurses work with oncologists and with their nursing peers within Disease Site Teams to plan and deliver care. Nursing care is provided based upon competencies of direct comprehensive and supportive care, navigating the system, maintaining professional practice, and through collaborative and evidence-based nursing practice. Primary Nurses deliver significant telephone-mediated care.

The NURSE PRACTITIONER (NP) functions in an expanded role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skills to formulate clinical decisions and appropriately manage health needs and promote wellness for patients diagnosed with a variety of hematology malignancies. Principal responsibilities include collecting and interpreting data about the health of the patient, determining a medical diagnosis and treating complex responses of individuals and families to actual or potential problems. The NP collaborates with the medical and allied health care team to determine the most appropriate clinical care pathway for the patient.

Using a multidisciplinary and collaborative team approach, dedicated to the principles of patient-and family-centered care, the Registered Nurse coordinates and evaluates patient care and provides nursing care according to the Standards of Practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario, and Standards of Practice for Critical Care Nurses in Ontario.
