The Registered Nurse (RN) functions as a valuable member within both the CYMHP inpatient and emergency mental health services, providing care to children and youth with complex mental health issues. The registered nurse is key in leading patient care, including assessment of risk, mental status examination, crisis management, establishment of effective therapeutic relationships, utilization of developmentally appropriate approaches to care, implementation and evaluation of therapeutic interventions, and coordination of services. The RN offers mental health teaching to patients and families, demonstrates knowledge of all Ontario legislation that guides mental health care and is responsible for meeting the medical needs of clients, including medication management and education. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for the Acute Medicine Program at the Hamilton General Hospital will be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario in the Extended Class-Adult, and will work within the scope of practice of the RN-EC provided by the College. Collaborating with interdisciplinary team members, and using a patient and family centered model of care.  The NP is responsible to: provide direct patient care, including the assessment and treatment of complex medical patients, coordination of care, discharge planning, and the coordination of related community and other resources for this patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings; initiate, participate, and/or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interdisciplinary care teams.  The Nurse Practitioner will work in partnership with General Internal Medicine, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at McMaster Children’s Hospital is comprised of a Level III NICU, a Level IIc nursery and a neonatal transport team, providing medical and surgical care to neonatal patients and their families. Our NICU serves a broad geographic area within southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family-centered care with a strong focus on evidence-based best practice and continuous quality improvement. The NP would support the clinical activity of the Endocrinologists / Pediatricians and the associated patient care and interventions through the Pediatric Weight Management Program. The program is most focused in outpatient care, although occasional inpatient care occurs. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team members, and using a patient and family centered model of care, the NP is responsible to: provide direct patient care, coordination of care, discharge planning, and the coordination of related community and other resources for this patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings; initiate, participate, and/or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interdisciplinary care teams. The NP reports to the Director, Critical Care and Ambulatory Services, McMaster Children's Hospital, and the Chief of Nursing Practice.

Participants in the SPEP program will gain relevant work experience under the supervision of an appointed preceptor for a minimum of 140 clinical hours. Practice hours may be extended, depending on individual learning needs. Applicants will demonstrate nursing knowledge, skill and judgment and exhibit an understanding of the CNO practice standards in keeping with the Hamilton Health Sciences policies and standards. The Nurse Practitioner (Adult) will provide focused, holistic clinical care in the inpatient and outpatient settings to patients with spinal conditions, such as neoplasms, Traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, cerebral and spinal hemorrhage and infection.  The position involves monitoring patient status and following up on spinal treatments.   The NP will play a significant role in program development, research, education and consultation. Additional accountabilities may be negotiated with NP and program leadership as this program develops.

The NP will function with the five domains of the role identified by the Canadian Nurses Association’s APN Framework. These domains consist of clinical practice, research, leadership, consultation and collaboration with education. The NP will provide leadership and promote excellence in pediatric family centered nursing care through expert clinical practice, education, consultation and research. The NP supports the clinical activity of the General Pediatrician - Complex Care and the associated patient care and interventions through the Ambulatory service including off site affiliated satellite clinics in LHIN 3 & 4. This would include the areas of the pediatric emergency department, inpatients and the outpatient clinics. Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team members, and using a patient and family centered model of care, the NP is responsible to: Provide direct patient care to their full scope of practice, coordination of care, discharge planning, and the coordination of related community and other resources for this patient population; mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate, and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings; initiate, participate, and/or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of Interprofessional care teams. The NP will work in partnership with the complex care team, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education.

As a member of a Multidisciplinary Health Care team, the Registered Nurse coordinates, performs and evaluates interventional diagnostic radiology examinations and provides patient care to meet the clients and family needs with the core values of respect, caring, innovation and accountability. Guides and directs clinical and technical associates in a teaching and research environment and functions independently with diverse & complex patient population and procedures in all area of Diagnostic Services. Rotation though all modalities and sites based on qualifications and unit requirements maybe required.
