The Vascular Surgery service at Vancouver General Hospital is the largest in Western Canada providing tertiary and quaternary level care for vascular surgery patients from across British Columbia. Vascular specific services provided at VGH that differentiate it from the other three major vascular centers in BC include:Complex stroke care as a result of the provincial stroke referral program being centered at VGH where the majority of complex stroke patients are referred. Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm surgery is a highly specialized program unique to VGH and requires extensive resources and surgeon skillsets including a strong collaboration with the cardiac surgery service at VGH. Other vascular centers in BC refer patients with complex redo or infected aortic and arterial problems for reconstruction and quaternary level care and these are also long, difficult procedures that often require multiple surgeon teams and innovative solutions which are unique to the VGH group in BC. VGH also provides treatment to the most complicated venous thrombosis patients in BC and a combined approach between vascular surgery and Interventional Radiology is often needed to provide best patient outcomes. VCH is pleased to announce we will now reimburse Nurse Practitioners (NPs) for the cost of the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE), upon successful completion, for NP candidates who have not yet completed the exam, and who are hired into a regular or temporary position with VCH. The OSCE reimbursement is in the form of a forgivable loan, which is forgiven after one (1) year of continuous employment in a regular or temporary position with VCH. As a Nurse Practitioner with VCH you will:Be responsible and accountable for the comprehensive assessment of patients and clients including diagnosing diseases, disorders and conditions.Initiate treatment including health care management, therapeutic interventions and prescribes medications in accordance with the statutory and regulatory standards, limits and conditions, and employer policies and procedures.Provide professional guidance to other health professionals and participates autonomously as a member of the interdisciplinary health teams.Collaborate with clients and other health professionals to identify and assess trends and patterns that have implications for clients, families and communities.Develop and implement population and evidence-based strategies to improve health and participate in policy-making and quality improvement activities that influence health services and practices.Participate in peer, program and self-review to evaluate the outcome of the services at the client, community and population level.Be responsible for own professional development and maintaining competence in the position, and maintaining privileges as active medical staff as required.Report to an Operational Director, Professional Practice and has key accountabilities for quality assurance and patient safety within the Regional Department of Nurse Practitioners. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the Employer policy. Qualifications and Skills Knowledge of: College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses. Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses. Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA)/Registered Psychiatric Nurses Act. Regional/Facility/Unit policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines. Nursing care knowledge related to clinical area. Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), Protection of Persons in Care Act, Mental Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Principles of Routine Practices (Universal Precautions) and other legislated acts. Roles and responsibilities of members of the healthcare team. Principles of delegation. Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills. Preference will be given to those applicants competent in an Aboriginal language and/or knowledge in Aboriginal customs, traditions and values. Demonstrated critical thinking/problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize care for an individual patient or group of patients. Ability to respond to a variety of simultaneous demands. Ability to recognize and pursue self-development opportunities. Ability to perform independently and as a member of the healthcare team. Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations. Ability to maintain concentration with frequent interruptions.
