 Summary of Duties: The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is a registered nurse who has acquired the expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies for expanded practice.  This advanced practice role involves analyzing, synthesizing and applying nursing knowledge, theory, and research evidence to foster system-wide changes and advance nursing care and the profession as a whole (CNA, 2008). The Nurse Practitioner (NP), having a specialty-based focus, functions in an expanded nursing role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to formulate clinical decisions. The NP practices according to the philosophy and standards of UHN and the Division of Nephrology and integrates knowledge and skill from nursing and medicine in order to assess, diagnose, treat and evaluate individuals who have renal failure requiring in-center hemodialysis. The role is a balance of independent practice and collaboration with the Nephrology interdisciplinary health care teams.
